Happy new year to all. I hope everyone had opportunity to rest, recuperate and prepare themselves for the year ahead.
As humans we tend to feel invincible and think that we can keep a high-intensity schedule going indefinitely, however experts tell us that when we’re under pressure – as many high performers are – our cortisol levels increase and this can have consequences for our health.
During my recent break, I found that it was difficult to wind down. It took two weeks to feel more relaxed and fully enjoy the company of family and friends. Up until then, I felt I should be busy. It took a while to realise that just joking, laughing and lazing with the people I love was doing enough.
This year, the need to slow down became even more obvious to me, because one of my children now lives overseas and came home to visit for four weeks. It was a precious month and eventually I was able to wind down enough to fully enjoy our time together.
It’s great fun to be with the people you love and fun is a great restorer of energy. We shared laughter, silly times and lazy days in the sun. By the end, I felt rejuvenated and ready to start a new year.
Now that I’m back in the office, my head is clearer and I’m feeling extremely positive about the year ahead.
With Australia Day falling this month, I’m also reminded how lucky we are to be part of this great country. Holidays are inbuilt into our work conditions and we have opportunity to rest, recuperate and prepare ourselves for new challenges.
I wish you all a great year ahead.
