I’m a great believer in continuous education, because it’s really important to remain fresh and innovative in your work. That’s why I continue to do industry specific courses and encourage our franchisees to do the same and to provide ongoing training for their staff.
Recently I completed the inaugural Certified Franchising Executive (CFE) program. The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) introduced this course in 2012 and it’s the only internationally recognised professional accreditation program for franchise executives. It involved an intensive program of seminars and online education, as well as participation in FCA approved activities and it also took into account our industry experience. I was in the first group of Australian executives to complete the program. There were only six of us in that group and we all felt very honoured to be among the first Australians to reach this milestone.
Our franchisees are also committed to ongoing training for themselves and their staffs. One great example is Mauro Caputo, the owner of our Loganholme restaurant. He runs a Continuing Professional Development program and regularly updates his staff on legislative changes and best practice. He also provides school-based training for his apprentices, so they can learn on the job. Once their training is complete, many of his staff go on to do further training, such as the chef who recently did master classes in chocolate making and cooking with avocadoes.
Mauro told me, “The marketplace is very competitive these days and having a well trained staff can give you the edge. By providing ongoing training, I’m actually investing in the next generation of staff. I’m very committed to that.”
